Diana (Ship) logbook, 1799-1802.

The logbook of the ship Diana details a sealing and shipping voyage from New York to Calcutta, Guangzhou (Canton), and Java, Indonesia, Oct. 1799-May 1802. The ship's master was James McCall. The logbook includes mention of animals seen during the voyage; at least one instance of naval desertion; diseases on board, specifically scurvy; indigenous peoples seen during the voyage; passenger traffic aboard this cargo ship; punishment of some of the merchant mariners on board; equipment and supplies aboard ship, specifically an inventory of the ship's stores; and examples of seafaring life. During its voyage, the Diana spoke the brig General Wayne (out of New York) and the ship Rousseau (out of Philadelphia).
